Chapter Seven

We had been in the air for over 15 hours when the concierge came by and looked down at me. I had just woken up after having fallen asleep again after the harrowing ride through the Straits of Gibraltar.

“We are preparing to land,” he parroted like a commercial flight attendant. “Make sure your seat belt is fastened, and your tray table is in the upright and fastened position.

There wasn’t a table on the seat in front of me. There was a table bolted to the floor. The irony wasn’t lost on me.

I looked out the window, and saw an incredible span of aqua blue sea as far as the eye could see. In the center of my window, as the airplane banked to the left, I saw a small island below. In the center of the island, I saw a runway that the pilot was clearly about to line up on.

Across the runway, about every 100 yards, was a large black pickup truck. Someone wanted the runway to be unusable for aircraft. Then, as I continued watching, I saw one of the trucks lurch forward and pull to a stop in the grass at the edge of the runway. Seconds later, another truck moved off the runway.

The plane banked again to the left, and my view of the runway disappeared from the window as the Gulfstream lined up on final approach. I could only hope that the runway was cleared by the time we got there.

Moments later, the wheels of the Gulfstream screeched as the plane touched down. I heard the whine of the reverse thrusters, and the plane decelerated rapidly. Soon, the plane turned off the runway, and taxied straight into a hanger, coming to stop just inside the building. I looked out the window and saw Stavros standing outside, with his arm around my wife. One step behind and to his right was Ivan, the flat-faced Russian goon who had zip-tied me to a chair that night in Las Vegas when I was forced to watch Stavros and Bella together.

The crew went about getting the door opened, and the stairs deployed as I gathered my bag and headed to the front of the plane.

“I hope you enjoyed your flight, Mr. Marchant,” the snooty concierge sniffed.

“It was fine, thanks,” I responded nonchalantly. I figured this was a bad time to tell him that I thought he was an asshole.

I went down the ladder and walked toward Stavros and Bella. I went first to Bella, and kissed her gently on the cheek.

“Good to see you, baby,” I told her.

“It’s good to see you too, Michael,” she responded in a soft voice.

“Michael!” Stavros made up for Bella’s softness with his own booming voice.

“Welcome to my island!” He boomed.

“Thanks,” I replied not really knowing how to respond to someone telling me that he owned an entire island.

“Let’s go to the house and get you some food and something to drink,” he said casually. “You must be tired. When you have rested, we can discuss business.
